Charge your Rivian on excess solar

SundialEV charges a Rivian R1 on surplus solar by throttling your OCPP wall charger. Connect your Rivian account as well — now in Beta — and it reads the car's real battery level, so it can stop at the charge level you choose and top up from the grid when the battery runs low. The Rivian connection is read-only: your charger stays in control.

Live in the app — solar-only charging, in real time

Four steps, with an OCPP wall charger

  1. Connect your solar
In SundialEV, connect the system that reports your solar and grid — Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge, Solis, Growatt, an Emporia Vue or Sense monitor, or the push API.
  2. Set up your wall charger
SundialEV controls charging through the charger, not the car. The Rivian connection needs a charger connected over OCPP, such as the Wallbox Pulsar Plus.
  3. Connect your Rivian account
In EV / Charger setup, under Optional: connect your EV, choose Rivian (Beta). Sign in with your Rivian email and password, then enter the one-time code Rivian sends you.
  4. Pick your vehicle and plug in
Choose the car that charges at home. Its battery level appears on your dashboard, and charging follows the sun up to your charge limit.

What Rivian gives SundialEV, and its limits

Provides

  • The car's battery level
  • A charge limit: SundialEV stops the charger when the car reaches it
  • Automatic low-battery top-ups from the grid, up to a level you set

Known limits

  • Beta. Tested so far on the R1S (Gen 2); the R1T is expected to behave the same.
  • Read-only. SundialEV never sends a command to the car — it can't start or stop charging, wake the car, or change the charge limit set in the car. All control goes through the charger.
  • Needs a wall charger connected to SundialEV over OCPP, such as the Wallbox Pulsar Plus. The Emporia charger connects a different way and doesn't work with the Rivian connection.
  • Your Rivian password is used once to sign in and is never stored. Rivian asks you to reconnect from time to time; solar charging carries on in the meantime.
  • Battery-level top-ups replace time-window grid top-up schedules. Connecting Rivian removes those schedules, and they don't come back on their own if Rivian later signs you out.
  • SundialEV is an independent app, not affiliated with Rivian.

Which EVs work: Rivian R1 (Beta). Any other EV still charges on surplus solar through a supported wall charger, without the battery-level features.

Frequently asked questions

Does SundialEV control my Rivian?
No. The Rivian connection is read-only and supplies one thing: the car's battery level. Starting, stopping and adjusting the charging current all go through your wall charger.
Do I have to connect my Rivian account?
No. An OCPP wall charger such as the Wallbox Pulsar Plus is enough to charge a Rivian on surplus solar. Connecting your Rivian account adds the car's battery level, which is what lets SundialEV stop at a charge limit and top up automatically when the battery is low.
How do I sign in, and is my password stored?
You sign in with your Rivian email and password, then the one-time code Rivian sends you. The password is used once to sign in and is never stored. Rivian asks you to reconnect from time to time.
